Housing Advocacy.

Learn more about taking action to give tenants more power here.

As many who visit the Texas Tenant Advisor may already know, the balance of power between landlords and tenants is almost fully shifted to building owners in our state. But the number of tenants far outweigh the number of landlords. Renters have a unique opportunity to make their voices heard, whether it be through public action, comment, voting, or many other ways. This space is where we can align ourselves with our neighbors, focus our energy, and effect real change for renters in Texas.

Once tenants recognize their numbers, and how that relates to their rights, we can engage for change.

Why you get involved

If you’ve arrived at this space, you may have an idea of the few rights that tenants have in the state of Texas. Landlords are overwhelmingly outnumbered in our state but yet those powerful few hold most of the power when it comes to the law. If you are wondering if there is a way to change this, you’re in luck. There are several organizations around Texas who are dedicated to expanding tenants’ rights by city and even statewide. The most important thing to remember when getting involved is there are millions of tenants just like you who deserve more rights.

It’s a common occurrence to have a bad experience with a landlord, yet most just chalk it up to the unfortunate way things are and move on. Not realizing how shared of an experience that truly is. We can share our experiences, consolidate our power, and unite to effect real change for millions of Texans.

HOW YOU GET INVOLVED

There are so many ways to get involved to help renters.

Would you like to volunteer or meet others fighting for change?
Here are some great organizations to do so:

Texas Organizing Project

Houston/San Antonio

TTU

Dallas/Fort Worth

Have you had an unfair eviction or issue with your apartment’s management?

It’s not guaranteed that the average renter is even aware of how few rights they have. To learn more about what you are entitled to, you can take these courses and learn your rights as they stand right now!

Tenant Organizing

One informed tenant can create dozens of informed tenants, whole apartment complexes, and entire communities. And we want to build a community of empowered renters.

HERE’S WHAT WE’RE DOING TO CREATE CHANGE

Texas Housers is fighting for a Tenant Bill of Rights in Texas.

We are working toward this in San Antonio, with eyes on adding these provisions to other metropolitan areas in our state, with a final destination being the Texas Legislature.

You can join us on this journey by spreading the word.

Is this something you want in your city? In our state?
Then we need to let Texans know that it is possible.

Tenants also have certain rights in courts, but Texas does not have right to counsel in eviction court, so many renters step into a proceeding without the knowledge that may help them remain housed.

You can join our Court Watch volunteer program or with Houston Eviction Solidarity Network, if you are based in Houston, San Antonio, or Dallas, to ensure that Justices of the Peace are observing the orders which are designed to serve renters.

Tenants Rights Around The Nation.

Your rights are achievable and replicable, we have seen it done around the country. Here are a few maps to show how our neighbors in other states in the U.S live.
